Both can improve the shape, size and colour of teeth. The difference lies in how much of the tooth is changed, how long they last and what they cost.

What is dental bonding?
Bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that is applied, shaped and hardened directly onto the tooth. It is often completed in a single visit, usually needs little or no removal of enamel, and is well suited to small chips or gaps.
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain or composite, fixed to the front of the tooth. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and typically need some enamel to be removed, so the decision is not reversible.
Side by side
- Cost: bonding generally costs less per tooth than veneers.
- Lifespan: veneers usually last longer; bonding may need repair or replacing sooner.
- Appearance: porcelain resists staining and looks very natural; resin can stain over time.
- Time: bonding is often one visit; veneers take two or more.
- Reversibility: bonding is more conservative; veneers are permanent.
Choosing between them
Bonding is a good place to start for minor changes. Veneers may suit larger or more extensive changes. A good dentist will explain both honestly, show you examples and not rush the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Do veneers damage teeth?
Porcelain veneers involve removing a thin layer of enamel, which cannot grow back. This is why the decision should be made carefully.
Can bonded teeth be whitened?
Resin does not whiten, so whiten your natural teeth first and then match the bonding to the new shade.
